How to remove glare and reflection on the windshield

Imagine that you are driving on a sunny day. What if the sunlight beats down too much so that it disturbs you to enjoy the scenery outside or even opening your own eyes while driving because of reflection on the windshield? Or the glare makes the license plate unreadable on the dash cam? Also, it could happen under the light in an underground parking lot. It may not bother you that much if you didn’t notice it yet. But once it gets under your skin, you will find it annoying.

It is called a ghost image. This makes it difficult for the driver to detect other objects while driving by reducing the contrast of road scenes. The glare is dangerous because the ghost, such as rays and images reflected from the instrument panel, can completely block the driver’s view. Light reflected or scattered by the driver’s eyes from the vehicle’s windshield creates a veil of luminance that the driver must look at to see the road ahead.

The effect of this phenomenon on the driver depends on how strong the reflectance is and the brightness of the background environment is. There is little flash when driving toward a bright background, but if the background is dark, the reflection effect will increase significantly, which can lead to dangerous traffic conditions. A good example of this is driving in a tunnel or garage on a clear day.

What can we do for eliminating the ghost images as much as possible? Here are some solutions to suggest.

3.    Dash mat

4.    Tint(35%)

Even though it might be the most expensive way, there are many feedbacks you can found that it actually worked to eliminate the glare by tinting the car. According to research, 35 percentage of tinting on average would be the best to secure the driver’s view not being too dark. However, you should do research regarding the law before putting the film on your dashboard. Because in some states, they prohibit the usage of sun films. For example, from the statistics in the United States, you can find that the states like NY and CA allow up to 70% while TX and OK do 25% only.

5.    CPL film

Lastly, you can buy a CPL film and just attach it to your dash cam. In this case, it can be adjustable when you just don’t care about the glare you can see through your own eyes but the glare on the video. There are many CPL filters not only for the dash cam but also just a camera. These filters help control reflections and make a clear image by filtering out unnecessary glare.

Conclusion:

I believe using those methods can let you get away with being suffering from the annoying windshield reflections. Even if this is not a perfect solution, it will work very finely at least.
